My preference is always for those rare, pure, old school boxing gyms, free of ego, and full of passion for the sport. But sometimes I include the odd boxercise place because I know that not everyone wants the nitty gritty of actual combat.

Why listen to me: I’ve been boxing as an amateur for 6 years and trained in countless boxing gyms around the world from Seattle to Spain. I’ve learnt that picking the right gym can literally change your life and want to help you do the same. Learn more about me here.

Impact Boxing is a top class authentic boxing gym.

They opened their doors back in 2002 and the gym has remained under ownership and operation of the Raposo Family. This family ownership means the atmosphere here is extremely friendly and the coaches really care for each and every member.

Head coach Louis Raposo really knows what he’s doing with over 20 years training national Golden Glove champs and junior Olympians. While he puts you through your paces and gives you world class boxing coaching, his wife Diana, who is the heart of the gym, will ensure everyone feels at home.

If that isn’t enough, the community and values here are rock solid. They support local kids who couldn’t afford to come otherwise and members are full of praise of the respectful energy of the place. Coach Reposo is often heard telling members to “leave their ego at the door”.

They have classes throughout the day, 6 days a week, including for beginners, intermediate, competitive, kids, and conditioning. There’s something here for everyone. If more than one in your family joins then they have some generous discounts.

AND the facility itself is awesome: it’s huge with a warehouse vibe and full of high quality equipment.

Impact has it all. Atmosphere. Coaches. Facility. Probably the best boxing gym in Calgary.

2️⃣ Olympus Boxing Club

Olympus Boxing Club in Calgary

  • Summary: The most loved boxing gym I’ve ever come across
  • Address: 3320 14th Avenue NE, Bay 1.
  • Google rating: 5.0 (+250 reviews!)
  • Opening hours: M-F: 10am-9pm, Sa: 10am-6pm
  • Pricing: $190 / month (unlimited classes)
  • Best for: boxers of all ages and abilities
  • Online: website, Facebook, Instagram

Olympus Boxing is extremely popular. Not in a very-busy bad way, but in a this-place-is-frikken-awesome way.

Many people talk of it being the best boxing gym they’ve been to, not just in Calgary but in the whole country. That’s some pretty rich praise.

Olympus, like the other gyms on this list, is a proper boxing gym focusing on teaching you real technique. There none of this boxercise stuff here. (Although there is a bit of Jiu Jitsu)

Coach Angelo and his team are hugely experienced coaches and treat everyone with respect and make sure that each member is getting the attention they need to improve.

There are no egos in this place, they’ve created a supportive atmosphere that makes it great for beginners, while also having the expertise for seasoned fighters.

The facility itself is spacious, full of natural light, great equipment, and supportive people! They have classes 6 days a week, morning and afternoon, including designated classes for kids and competitive boxers.

At $190 / month it’s a little on the expensive side but it is reduced to $140 / month if you commit to 6 months. And given how awesome this gym is, a commitment wouldn’t be such a bad idea.

3️⃣ Grizzly Boxing & Fitness

  • Summary: Husband & wife operated Grizzly is a fierce and fantastic boxing gym
  • Address: 820 28 St NE Bay 9
  • Google rating: 4.8
  • Opening hours: M-F: 5-9pm, Sa: 10am-1pm
  • Pricing: $150 / month (unlimited classes)
  • Best for: beginners, pros, kids, everyone!
  • Online: website, Facebook, Instagram

Grizzly was founded in 2010 by husband and wife duo, Wayne and Darcy, who themselves met at a Calgary boxing gym before setting their own place up here. This gym is rooted in a deep passion for the sport and true love!

Since then, Grizzly has evolved into a much-loved boxing gym, offering training to anyone whether you want to get extremely fit or train for a championship bout.

Wayne, Darcy and their team are all extremely experienced, motivating, and respectful to everyone that comes into their gym.

It’s thanks to their personalities that so many members describe Grizzly’s as a “home away from home” and “unparalleled”. It’s very hard to find a bad word said about this.

The facility itself is awesome. It’s large, spacious, and clean, with all the training equipment you could need. They have up to 6 classes during the day for you to choose from including beginners, advanced, strength and conditioning, sparring, youth, and classes for those suffering from Parkinson’s.

You can go to as many classes a month for $150 or they have some cheaper monthly options at $99 / month if you commit to 6 months and only want one class a week.

No doubt one of the best boxing gyms in Calgary. Go check out Grizzly, you won’t regret it.

4️⃣ Bowmont Boxing Club

  • Summary: An old school non-profit boxing gym. Great value with top class coaches.
  • Address: 1515 Home Rd NW
  • Google rating: 5.0
  • Opening hours: M & W: 6-8pm, T & T: 7:30-9pm, Sa: 11am-1pm
  • Pricing: $90 / month (unlimited classes)
  • Best for: those looking for great value and pure boxing
  • Online: website, Facebook, Instagram

This place is practically an institution having been founded back in 1983.

It’s a non-profit and all the trainers here are volunteers. They’re all also former pro boxers. There aren’t many places you’ll find boxing coaching from a team this experienced and at such an affordable rate of $90 / month.

Bowmont Boxing Club is one of those old school, authentic boxing gyms where you’ll learn to hit and get hit.

Whether you’re a pro training for a championship fight, or a total newbie looking to get started, Bowmont will welcome you. Just make sure you’re willing to put the effort in and want to learn the true art of boxing.

There’s nothing flashy about this place but it’s all about the boxing. And that’s precisely how a boxing gym should be. They have their own slightly unconventional method of training, similar to the training of the Cuban national team.

The only downside to Bowmont is that it only has one or two classes a day (understandably as it’s volunteer run) so it might not necessarily fit your schedule.

5️⃣ Calgary Boxing Club

Calgary Boxing Club

  • Summary: A real real old school gym with a strong competitive team
  • Address: 2005 10 Ave SW
  • Google rating: 5.0
  • Opening hours: M-F: 5:30-7pm, Sa: 8-9:30am
  • Pricing: $100 / month (unlimited classes)
  • Best for: competitive fighters
  • Online: website, Facebook

If you’re looking for an old school boxing gym, like out of a Rocky movie, then look no further.

Calgary Boxing Gym is about as old school as it gets. Unsurprising given that it’s been training fighters since 1979!

The main focus of Calgary Boxing Gym is their competitive boxing team, so this is the ideal place to join if you are serious about your boxing and want to compete.

It does mean that training, and sparring in particular, can get a bit intense, so if you’re after boxercise then this definitely isn’t the place for you.

Boxing teams forge very close bonds with each other so the community here is extremely strong, and doesn’t just include head coaches but also volunteers and parents of some of the kids in the team.

Despite having a top competitive team, they also have classes on Tuesday and Thursday evenings for recreational boxers. Members only, no drop ins. They ask that you have some experience before joining these classes so if you’ve never boxed before then book in a private one on one session with them to learn the basics.

It would be harder to find a gym with more passion for the art of boxing than Calgary Boxing Gym. Check it out.

6️⃣ 10th Street Boxing

10th Street Boxing in Calgary

  • Summary: An old school feel with a modern look. Great boxing gym run by a pro boxer.
  • Address: 306 10 St NW

  • Pricing: $160 / month (12 classes)
  • Best for: beginners, kids, pros, everyone
  • Online: website, Instagram, Facebook

It’s hard to find a bad word said about 10th Street Boxing.

Head Coach Ted Reno (a current pro boxer who still fights) and his crew have created an extremely friendly but motivating atmosphere, and will push you to your limits in the ever-changing classes.

Like all great boxing gyms, 10th Street has a strong community feel to it and isn’t intimidating at all for newbies and boxing first timers. Ted knows the name of everyone in his gym and is passionate about helping each and every person in the gym to get healthy and learn the sport of boxing.

And wow, do they work hard here. 10th Street is open from 6am-7pm during the week and Saturday mornings too. They have up to 10 classes throughout the day for you to choose from including boxing, conditioning, weight lifting, sparring, and even a bit of yoga.

10th Street is undoubtedly one of the best boxing gyms in Calgary. I’d love to be a member here!

7️⃣ Legacy Boxing Club

 Legacy Boxing Club

  • Summary: Great boxing gym, especially for beginners and kids
  • Address: 4950 106 Ave SE unit 125
  • Google rating: 4.9
  • Opening hours: M-T: 4-8pm, Sa: 10am-1pm
  • Pricing: $125 / month (unlimited classes)
  • Best for: beginners and kids

Most of them talk about the family friendly environment that Coaches Jesse and Mike have created here. It’s welcoming for all ages and abilities (they have specific classes for kids, women, and beginners), regardless of whether you want to just get in great shape or train for a fight.

Legacy Boxing Gym is perfect for beginners but don’t let that fool you if you’re a more seasoned boxer: the coaching staff are extremely knowledgeable and experienced and have something to teach boxers of all levels.

hey have dedicated sparring classes so you know you’ll get the opportunity for some real combat if you want it.

Their kids classes here are also a huge hit. They are able to keep the kids motivated and engaged for the entire session, and many parents credit the team here for totally transforming their kid.

So if your child is keen on boxing, or just needs a bit of a stress outlet then Legacy Boxing Club might be the perfect place.

Group classes are available throughout the afternoons, and one on one training is also available if you wanna splash the cash and get a bit more attention.

Another top class boxing gym in Calgary. Highly recommended.

8️⃣ Dynamite Boxing Club

Dynamite Boxing Club in Calgary

  • Summary: Lots of love for the unrivaled crew at Dynamite
  • Address: 1715 27 Ave NE #5
  • Google rating: 4.9
  • Opening hours: M: 9am-6pm, T&T: 9am-7pm, W&F: 9am-7pm, Sa: 9am-1pm
  • Pricing: $155 / month (unlimited classes)
  • Best for: all boxers
  • Online: website, Facebook, Instagram

Yet another top class boxing gym in Calgary. Seriously, this city has so many epic places to choose from.

Dynamite is a grass roots boxing gym that has been teaching the Sweet Science since 2001.

There’s a strong family feel and good vibes here, driven by the hugely popular, caring, and knowledgeable coaches. They have an active amateur team too which always helps create a strong bond within a boxing gym.

They have recreational, youth, and competitive training programs that include group classes or one on ones. The only downside is that they only have one or two classes most days for you to choose from but outside of those class times you can come to Open Gym and train with any of the other members who are around or get some tips from the coaches.

A great all round boxing gym for getting fit, learning true boxing, and meeting awesome people in the process.

Dynamite is explosive (sorry, awful pun, couldn’t help myself). It doesn’t deserve to be down here at number 8 but there are so many great gyms in town it was impossible to rank them.

Highly recommended.

9️⃣ Southpaw Boxing Gym

Southpaw Boxing Gym

  • Summary: Careful of some dodgy contracts. Solid trainers and boxing program, though.
  • Address: 3130 Glenmore Ct SE
  • Google rating: 4.3
  • Opening hours: M-T: 5am-9pm, F: 5am-7pm, Sa: 9am-4pm
  • Pricing: $185 / month (20 classes)
  • Best for: those who live local
  • Online: website, Facebook, Instagram

There are lots of negative reviews about the owner of the gym having some very dodgy practices that make it hard to cancel contracts.

There can always be misunderstandings but in this case there are dozens of people who are extremely upset about how they have been treated by the owner. So, beware of what you’re signing if you train here.

It’s a shame as the coaches are awesome and many people clearly do have good experiences with Southpaw’s boxing and fitness programs.

You’ll no doubt get a great workout and learn proper boxing instruction here, and can also prepare for competitive fights too if that’s what you’re goals are.

There are so many great boxing gyms in Calgary that it isn’t worth risking going to a gym that doesn’t have strong values.

At $185 per month its also pretty expensive. If it’s very local to you then maybe give it a shot, but just be wary of the contracts.

How to pick a Calgary boxing gym

  • Coaches – an experienced, motivating coach makes all the difference. Not just when it comes to improving your technique but also in encouraging you to keep coming back time and time again. Becoming a good boxer takes a long time and so it’s important you find a coach that you click with if this is something you want to do for many years. Reviews will often focus on coaches so try looking for those for some insights.
  • Convenience of location and class timings – this is key. My boxing gym is on the same block as my home so I have no excuse not to go almost everyday, even if I’m not feeling up to it. Finding a gym that’s close to home or work will make your life much easier and help to make going to boxing training a habit. The same applies to class timings, if you have to massively disrupt your day to get to a class because it doesn’t fit your schedule then you’re going to be less likely to go.
  • Gym focus – I don’t have a problem with boxercise classes, but make sure you know what you’re signing up for if you join one of these. Boxercise is very different than actually learning how to fight and getting sparring experience. If you truly want to learn how to box then you need to box. That involves punching other people and getting punched yourself.
  • Trial class – most boxing gyms will allow you to have a free trial class so you can get a feel for the place before you sign up. This is a great way of evaluating whether you like the coach, the energy, and the focus of the gym. Always worth asking for a free trial class if you’re not sure whether it’s offered.

How much do boxing gyms in Calgary cost? 💰

  • Monthly memberships: ~$100-200 per month. Most places offer unlimited classes to their members. Be sure to check for this.
  • One-on-one personal training: Depending on the gym, costs are around $70 per hour as a minimum.
  • Drop-in boxing classes for non-members: ~$15-$30 per class
  • Initiation fee: not all places make you pay one of these (and I’m not a fan of it) but those that do usually charge a one-off fee of $50-$100

12th Round 🔔

I know it doesn’t help you choose when I give so many of these gyms 10/10 but honestly they all deserve it. You can’t go wrong with any of these top scoring places.
