What’s Big Right Boxing all about?

Finding the right place to train in boxing will make all the difference.

Get it wrong, and you could be put off the sport for good.

Get it right, and you’ll be obsessed.

My preference is for those old school places where boxing is seeping out of the old brick walls and where the bags are held together with tape. These are the places with depth of character and where you’ll really learn to fight. To hit and get hit.

But I get that isn’t for everyone so I also research boxing fitness studios that teach you the technique without the actual combat.

If Muhammed Ali was Spanish, this is where he would have trained

What makes a great boxing gym?

When researching and visiting boxing gyms there are a few things I look out for:

  • The atmosphere – this will tell you everything you need to know about the coaches and the other members. An electric, welcoming atmosphere free of egos will soon make your boxing gym feel like home. Community-focused, family run gyms are often best for this.
  • The format – if you want to learn how to properly box you need to fight. Many “boxing” gyms don’t allow sparring or contact. This is fine if your main focus is fitness but make sure you know what you’re signing up for.
  • The coaches – do they give you personal attention and instruction? Do they have experience? Do they care about your personal progress or do they just care about getting you into a long contract?
  • What doesn’t really matter – cleanliness and brand new equipment. Boxing isn’t meant to be flashy and instagrammable. It’s gritty and it’s dirty. And that’s why we love it.

Who am I?

My name is Harry and I started Big Right Boxing to help everyone who wants to train in the Sweet Science find the right gym for them, whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned fighter.

I took up boxing 7 years ago and it changed my life. I want to help others do the same.

Love nothing more than a sweet jab to the jaw and that thrill you get when you slip out the way of an incoming right hand.

Here to help all you amateur boxers learn about the sport and find the best gyms near you to hone your skills. I hope you like my stuff and please let me know if you have anything to say.

Don’t show this photo to my mum…

I’ve also spent time training in Muay Thai in Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand
