My preference is always for those rare, pure, old school boxing gyms, free of ego, and full of passion for the sport. But sometimes I include the odd boxercise place because I know that not everyone wants the nitty gritty of actual combat.

Why listen to me: I’ve been boxing as an amateur for 6 years and trained in countless boxing gyms around the world from Seattle to Spain. I’ve learnt that picking the right gym can literally change your life and want to help you do the same. Learn more about me here.

PLEASE leave your own opinions and experiences about Montreal boxing gyms in the comments at the bottom and I’ll continuously update this page to make it as useful as possible!

Like all great boxing gyms, it is welcoming of people of all ages and abilities and will make sure that everyone gets the attention they need to progress their skills. Here you’ll find up and coming champs training alongside first timers.

Underdog has everything you’d want from a great boxing gym: a cool facility, extremely experienced coaches, a wide range of abilities of members, and a great environment.

They have different tiers in the class depending on your experience so that everyone can learn at a pace that is suitable for them. Or you can just go there for the fitness if you’re not interested in the fighting part of boxing.

If you’re looking to be coached by the best and train for a competitive bout then look no further than Grant Brothers.

A boxercise studio this most definitely is not, so if you’re look for Instagram content and superfood smoothies then keep looking. This is raw boxing.

Throughout those many years they’ve produced numerous champions and won awards of excellence for the gym. It’s constantly ranked as one of the top places to train in Montreal, and for good reason.

Boxers of all levels are welcome here in the group classes, and the facility is well equipped if you just want to train on your own. Private classes are also available for those wanting some extra attention.

Their classes, which include boxing and HIIT, are in the evenings, while the rest of the time is open gym. They split their boxing classes between “modern boxing” and “old school” boxing so you can learn a range of different styles.

Universel boxing gym in Montreal

  • Summary: a passionate boxing gym with awesome values
  • Address: 454 Beaumont Ave

  • Online: website, Instagram, Facebook

Universel Boxing Club is yet another much loved, highly rated Montreal boxing gym.

Lots of praise here is directed towards the popular Head Coach Wassim who is extremely friendly and attentive to everyone who steps into the gym.

The workouts are seriously grueling (you knew it wouldn’t be easy right?) but accessible, and you’ll learn huge amounts in a short space of time. They have 2 or 3 classes each day for you to choose from, including sparring sessions if you’re looking to take your boxing to the next level.

I love how this gym lives its rock solid values of confidence, self-esteem, and inclusion, by also having specialist sessions for people with disabilities. A gym with a heart like this is where you want to train.

Their website is in French but don’t worry if you don’t speak much/any. They’ll take care of you. Oh, also the spacious, mural-decorated facility is awesome

No doubt one of the best boxing gyms in Montreal. Highly recommended!

  • Pricing: $119 / month
  • Best for: those looking for some variety in their combat training
  • Online: website, Instagram, Facebook

As the name suggests, Angry Monkey is an MMA gym rather than a pure boxing gym, but I’ve included it in this list as it has a decent boxing programme, offering a boxing class everyday, and also because it’s just a damn good gym.

All the coaches here are extremely passionate and put their hearts and souls into coaching martial arts.

They strike the perfect balance of patience for beginners and complexity for the more experienced fighters. Truly anyone is welcome here (so long as you’re willing to work hard!).

The vibe here is always positive and encouraging, while still maintaining the discipline and focus needed in order to do well in combat sports. Students are of all abilities and backgrounds and, in what is a sign of a great community, will always take the time to help new students.

Boxing classes are held in the evenings during the week and on Saturday morning.

How to pick a Montreal boxing gym

  • Coaches – an experienced, motivating coach makes all the difference. Not just when it comes to improving your technique but also in encouraging you to keep coming back time and time again. Becoming a good boxer takes a long time and so it’s important you find a coach that you click with if this is something you want to do for many years. Reviews will often focus on coaches so try looking for those for some insights.
  • Convenience of location and class timings – this is key. My boxing gym is on the same block as my home so I have no excuse not to go almost everyday, even if I’m not feeling up to it. Finding a gym that’s close to home or work will make your life much easier and help to make going to boxing training a habit. The same applies to class timings, if you have to massively disrupt your day to get to a class because it doesn’t fit your schedule then you’re going to be less likely to go.
  • Gym focus – I don’t have a problem with boxercise classes, but make sure you know what you’re signing up for if you join one of these. Boxercise is very different than actually learning how to fight and getting sparring experience. If you truly want to learn how to box then you need to box. That involves punching other people and getting punched yourself.
  • Trial class – most boxing gyms will allow you to have a free trial class so you can get a feel for the place before you sign up. This is a great way of evaluating whether you like the coach, the energy, and the focus of the gym. Always worth asking for a free trial class if you’re not sure whether it’s offered.

How much do boxing gyms in Montreal cost? 💰

  • Monthly memberships: There’s a huge range here from ~$80-150 per month. Most places offer unlimited classes to their members. Be sure to check for this.
  • One-on-one personal training: Depending on the gym, costs are around $50 per hour as a minimum.
  • Drop-in boxing classes for non-members: ~$15-$30 per class
  • Initiation fee: not all places make you pay one of these (and I’m not a fan of it) but those that do usually charge a one-off fee of $50-$100

12th Round 🔔

Get me back to Montreal now. This city has an abundance of world class boxing gyms. Hard Know, Pound 4 Pound 4 Pound, Donnybrook etc etc. You really are spoiled for choice and can’t go wrong with any of the gyms on this list. So pick one, get your gloves on, and start training.

Happy fighting! 🥊🥊

Boxing is the toughest and loneliest sport in the world. You’ve got all the fans, lots of hangers-on jumping up and shouting different words. But when you actually go in the ring, it’s a very lonely and scary place. It’s just you and the other guy.
